Check tubeless sealant about every two to three months until you know how quickly your setup dries. Add only the measured amount needed to restore the manufacturer’s target. Hot or arid conditions, porous casings, small tire volumes, frequent riding, and recently sealed punctures can require earlier checks.

The sealant label is the controlling schedule. Current examples vary: Stan’s Original lists a 2-to-7-month effective period, Orange Seal Endurance is designed for longer intervals, and Muc-Off says its MTB formula can last up to six months in temperate climates.

Checking does not always mean adding. If the system still contains the manufacturer’s required amount of mobile sealant, close it correctly and leave the level alone.

Why sealant dries at different rates

Tubeless sealant is consumed in several ways. Liquid escapes while closing punctures, coats porous casing surfaces, collects around leaks, and gradually loses moisture through the tire. Conditions change each process.

Inspect sooner when:

  • Summer heat or dry air accelerates evaporation.
  • A new or lightweight casing absorbs sealant.
  • A small road or gravel tire carries less liquid reserve.
  • The tire has sealed thorns or other punctures.
  • Air loss has increased without a clear pressure or valve cause.
  • Dried material is visible around the bead or valve.
  • The bike has been stored for months.

A tire can hold air after its liquid sealant has dried. An airtight casing is not proof that enough mobile sealant remains to close the next puncture.

How to check the level

Use the sealant maker’s approved method. Common options include a compatible dipstick through a removable valve core, inspection through a short open bead section, or a manufacturer-specific tool.

Before opening the system:

  1. Put the valve away from the bottom of the wheel.
  2. Deflate the tire completely.
  3. Keep your face away from the valve.
  4. Protect brake rotors, pads, and rim-brake tracks.
  5. Shake or rotate only as the check method directs.

Do not rely only on shaking the wheel and listening. Tire inserts, dried clumps, and small volumes can make the sound misleading.

How much should you add?

Use the manufacturer’s volume chart for the exact tire size and subtract the mobile amount you can verify remains. A routine top-up is not automatically the same quantity used for a dry new installation.

Road, gravel, cross-country, trail, downhill, and fat-bike tires have very different air volumes. Tire inserts and porous casings can also affect the recommended amount.

Signs that a top-up is not enough

Open, clean, or repair the system instead of blindly adding sealant when:

  • Dried latex forms large sheets or balls.
  • The valve repeatedly clogs.
  • Rim tape is lifting, split, or leaking at a spoke hole.
  • The bead, casing, or rim is damaged.
  • Different sealant formulas may be mixed.
  • The tire cannot hold pressure long enough to inspect safely.
  • Sealant leaks into the rim cavity.

Should you remove old dried sealant?

Follow the tire and sealant makers’ instructions. Loose balls and heavy sheets can be removed during planned service, especially when they interfere with the valve, insert, or bead. Do not scrape a tire casing with a sharp tool or solvent that its maker has not approved.

When switching brands, ask both manufacturers about compatibility. If mixing is not explicitly approved, remove the old product and prepare the system as directed before adding the new formula.

How climate changes the schedule

In hot, arid regions, start with monthly checks. Extend the interval only after several inspections show enough mobile sealant remains. A bike stored in a hot garage can dry faster even when it is not being ridden.

Cool or humid storage may lengthen the interval, but it does not guarantee the maximum printed service period. Freezing limits and low-temperature performance also differ by formula.

For example, Stan’s lists its Original formula for use down to -20°F, while Muc-Off publishes a separate pressure and temperature range for its MTB sealant. Those specifications apply only to the named formula, not to every tubeless product.

Can you mix tubeless sealants?

Do not mix them unless both product makers say the formulas are compatible. Different latex systems, particles, and additives may clump or lose performance. Similar color or texture is not evidence of compatibility.

Record what the tire actually needs

Write the installation date, product, initial quantity, tire size, and each inspection or top-up. After three or four checks, the wheel’s real drying rate will be more useful than a generic calendar reminder.

Recheck sooner after a puncture, tire swap, long storage period, or major seasonal change. Replace used plugs and ride-kit supplies at the same time.

Bottom line

Begin with a two-to-three-month check interval, shorten it to monthly in hot or dry conditions, and never exceed the sealant maker’s schedule without inspection evidence. Add a measured top-up only when the verified mobile level is low, and repair tape, valve, bead, casing, or rim faults instead of hiding them with more sealant.
