Use the quantity listed by your sealant manufacturer for the exact tire size. As a current reference, Stan’s recommends 50 ml for a 700x28 tire, 80 ml for a 650x47 tire, 105 ml for a 29x2.3 tire, and 175 ml for a 26x4 fat-bike tire.

Those numbers are per tire, not per bicycle. They are starting quantities for Stan’s Original sealant, not a universal chart for every formula, tire casing, insert, or climate.

Tire volume increases quickly with both width and diameter. That is why a wide 29-inch or fat-bike tire needs substantially more liquid than a narrow road tire.

Why another sealant may use a different amount

Sealants differ in carrier liquid, particle size, solids content, intended pressure range, and casing compatibility. Tire casings also vary in porosity, and an insert increases the surface area the sealant coats.

Use this order of authority:

  1. The exact sealant label or current manufacturer chart.
  2. The tire and insert maker’s compatibility instructions.
  3. A measured adjustment for a known porous casing or severe local conditions, when the makers allow it.
  4. A generic chart only when product-specific guidance is unavailable.

Do not mix formulas unless both makers approve it. A reaction between chemistries can create clumps or reduce sealing performance.

Initial fill vs. maintenance top-up

An initial installation must coat a dry tire, bead, and rim interface. A maintenance top-up replaces liquid lost to drying, punctures, casing absorption, and prior service. The two quantities are not automatically the same.

Check the existing liquid before adding a full initial dose. Too much sealant adds rotating weight, creates more cleanup, and may pool without improving puncture performance.

How to measure the amount accurately

Use a graduated cup, marked injector, or the maker’s single-tire bottle. Read the scale at eye level and confirm whether it shows milliliters, fluid ounces, or both.

For reference:

  • 1 US fluid ounce is about 29.6 ml;
  • 2 US fluid ounces are about 59 ml;
  • 4 US fluid ounces are about 118 ml.

Do not use a kitchen tool that will return to food service. Wear eye protection and follow the sealant’s handling and cleanup instructions.

Add sealant through the bead or valve

The pour method adds measured liquid before the final bead section is mounted. The injection method sends compatible sealant through a removable valve core.

How to tell whether the tire needs more

Do not rely only on the calendar. Investigate when:

  • the tire loses pressure faster than normal;
  • no liquid can be heard or measured inside;
  • the valve begins to clog with dried material;
  • a recent puncture sprayed a visible amount;
  • dry film or sealant balls appear during service;
  • the casing continues to weep at many small points.

Pressure loss can also come from rim tape, the valve base, a damaged bead, or an incompatible tire-rim fit. More sealant will not repair those faults.

Can too much tubeless sealant cause problems?

Yes. An excessive quantity increases weight and mess, can collect in one part of a stored wheel, and wastes product. It may also mask a tape or valve problem without creating a durable repair.

Remove and inspect the tire if it repeatedly loses air despite an adequate liquid quantity. Stop riding if the bead, casing, rim, or valve may be damaged.

What if your tire size is not listed?

Use the nearest manufacturer-listed size as a starting reference, then ask the sealant maker when the volume difference is meaningful. Do not simply round a high-volume tire down to a narrow-tire quantity.
