When to Replace Bike Tires
Replace a bike tire when casing threads or protection layers show, it bulges, the bead is damaged, cuts reach the casing, or grip and wear indicators are exhausted.

Replace a bike tire when casing threads or the puncture-protection layer are visible, a bulge appears, the bead is damaged, a cut reaches structural fibers, a wear indicator is exhausted, or the tire no longer provides dependable grip. Mileage and age alone are poor universal limits.
Seven replacement signs
- Threads or belt material show through the tread. The protective rubber is gone.
- A bulge, wobble, or localized distortion appears. Deflate immediately; the casing may be separating.
- The bead is cut, kinked, loose, or exposed. It can no longer retain the tire predictably.
- A sidewall cut reaches the casing. A boot is an emergency measure, not a permanent repair.
- The maker’s tread-wear indicators disappear. Use the indicators for that exact model.
- Cracks are deep, widespread, or open when flexed. Tiny surface checking and structural cracking are not the same, so inspect inside too.
- Wet grip or handling has materially deteriorated. Compound aging and squared profiles can matter before threads appear.
Continental’s bicycle tire maintenance guidance calls for replacement when a sidewall tear can let the tube bulge, or when bare casing shows in the tread. Schwalbe’s wear guidance likewise uses visible casing or puncture-protection material as a clear replacement point.
What does not set a universal deadline
There is no single safe mileage for every bicycle tire. Rider and cargo mass, pressure, road surface, braking, wheel position, compound, casing, temperature, storage, and impacts change wear. Rear tires often wear faster, but a front-tire failure can be harder to control.
A calendar age printed online cannot overrule the tire maker’s storage and inspection guidance. Read the date code if provided, but decide from the exact manufacturer’s instructions and the tire’s condition.
Inspect once a week and after impacts
- Inflate within the bicycle, rim, and tire limits.
- Rotate each wheel and watch for a bulge or lateral wobble.
- Remove embedded glass or flint before it works deeper.
- Check the center and shoulders for flat spots, cuts, and exposed material.
- Inspect both sidewalls, the bead line, and areas near rim-brake pads.
- Investigate repeated flats instead of replacing tubes indefinitely.

Replace the cause, not only the tire
Underinflation can fatigue sidewalls; excessive pressure can worsen harsh impacts. A brake pad set too high may slice a sidewall. Frame or fender rubbing, damaged rim tape, a sharp rim, incompatible sizing, or a wheel out of true can quickly damage the new tire.

Do not wait for a blowout. Replace on structural damage, exposed casing, failed wear indicators, or lost grip—and correct the pressure, fit, brake, or clearance problem that caused premature wear.
